media release 17 July 2014

According to a press release from Brighton & Hove City Council, Committee chair Phelim Mac Cafferty said: ‘The scheme was approved at committee today but we now need to see whether the government wish to call it in.  In an ideal world we would have had an application to restore this building as a theatre—something that councillors at committee repeatedly said they would have preferred. The sad reality of the situation is that we didn’t have that today.’ See the press release here.

WE WAS ROBBED!
The planning application for an eight-screen cinema and four restaurants was debated by the council planning committee on Wednesday 16 July. They voted eight in favour of the full planning application for a cinema and restaurants, three against and one abstention.
That’s not the end of the story. We remain confident that the outcome would have been different if the information we had given should have been been allowed to be used appropriately in the planning process. We were victims of council protocols.

Most councillors said they would have preferred a theatre but the current application was the only one available. Some questioned the viability of the cinema proposal but the majority fell for the seriously flawed argument advanced by the developer that theatre would not be viable.

This is why we are asking the Secretary of State to call in the application.

You will be able to see the webcast of the committee meeting on the council website shortly.
