The city’s Economic Partnership voted unanimously to support the proposals for additional housing on the 7.5 hectares of urban fringe at its regular quarterly meeting last Tuesday.

The urban fringe has been revisited by council officers to deliver more housing after the Planning Inspectorate told the council to increase their proposed supply of housing over the next 20 years [see earlier story]. The city is projected to need up to 24,000 new homes but land had only been identified for 11,300 when the Plan was presented to the Inspectorate in December 2013. With the addition of urban fringe sites that had previously been excluded the figure rises to 13,600.

The Partnership will now make a formal representation to the Planning Inspector and urge the city council’s three party leaders to support the Plan at the next Policy and Resources Committee meeting in October.

The return of the City Plan [Core Strategy] to Inspector Laura Graham in the autumn is a last chance to get it passed at examination in public. If it fails it is highly likely that the city will have to return to the drawing board which could delay adoption of the Plan by years.
