To gain funding, to complete “the Bevy” project as a community cooperative and make it the pub of choice for residents of East Brighton.

Support the first urban, community, co-op estate pub in the UK!!!

With pubs closing at the rate of two a day here’s a unique chance to help buck the trend.

The 18,000 people of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean in Brighton have spent 3 years without a pub but a determined and passionate group of local residents have come together to try and change that.

The group are fighting to re-open the Bevendean as a ‘hub’ not just a pub. Besides the more traditional activities of socialising, pool, darts and real ales, we want to provide decent food for families at affordable prices, film nights and a place for everyone from pensioners to mums with toddlers to meet and get involved in.

The community pub/café aims to provide a friendly and vibrant meeting place and employment and apprenticeships for local people. The Community Kitchen will run cookery courses and we’ll grow food in the pub gardens. The venue will be available to hire for weddings, birthdays and other functions and there will be space for small community groups such as the local pigeon fanciers to meet.

We want a place to eat, drink and meet that is in our community – somewhere we can walk to, not a bus or car ride away in town. Our aim is to provide a venue that is inclusive, accessible, safe and welcoming – a place that will help put the heart back into our community and neighbourhood.

One way or another we intend to raise £200,000 to get the pub off the ground. We intend to raise this through loans, grants and people buying into the co-op through shares from as little as £1. It’s a lot of money to find but, with enough people behind us perhaps even volunteering time and skills to help create the pub, we can get there.

We have to move quickly – we already have an impressive business plan and are actively seeking finance. But this won’t happen without your support. If you like what you’ve read and want to help us make this a reality make sure that you ‘like’ us now. Then share our posts with your friends and ask them to support us too. The more people we can show are actively behind us the better our chances of making this a reality!

The Bevy is a community owned and operated pub and cafe.

Overall management is by a committee of local people who, when the brewery closed the pub in 2011, were determined to re-open it as a community hub as well as a pub and cafe serving excellent meals and drinks.

Day to day operation is by the manager, Chris, and his staff

There are 800 shareholders who each have a minimum of one £10 share.

Shares are still available, if you would like to invest or can offer some time to support the venture, please get in touch.

The Bevy cafe is open 12 – 6 and the pub 12 – 11 every day serving a fine selection of drinks and meals.

Check the Menu page for details of our food and the Diary page for information about our regular events.

The bar serves a range of Harveys and guest real ales, lagers, wines and soft drinks and the cafe provides hot drinks, cakes, snacks and meals
