Recycling : The Wood Store Brighton

Born in 1998, Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling was the first scheme of its kind in the country.

We collect waste timber for reuse and recycling, keeping it as far up the waste heirarchy as possible. When we began, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of wood was sent to landfill every year, which we thought was a terrible waste. Why not collect that unwanted wood so that it can be reused or made into useful things, creating opportunities for people to gain work experience and learn new skills at the same time.

Our status as a social enterprise means that any profit we make stays within the business, enabling us to improve our facilites and conditions for our volunteers and staff. We have always had a strong focus on both environmental and financial sustainability and, apart from a small start-up grant, we operate without any financial support enabling us to be independent and do things in our own unique way.

come and join us
We strive to make volunteering with us fun and rewarding. Whether you want to get back into the swing of working with a team, want to gain experience in the construction industry or just have some spare time and want to keep yourself busy, why not come and see what we do.

The main area for volunteering is out and about with our collections team. We cover an area from Worthing to Seaford so you’ll get to see a lot of diverse places.

As part of the team, you’ll be collecting from building sites, companies and individuals that have unwanted wood. We then sort through the wood that we collect and take what can be re-used to our shop in the centre of Brighton. Once you have some experience under your belt with us, we can arrange for you to have First aid at work training and arrange for you to take a CSCS examination. If you have some woodworking experience, we occasionally have voluntary opportunities with our carpentry team. Contact Christian on 07946 301722 to discuss joining us or email here!

Collections
We operate a timber collections service throughout Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area. Our teams collect from individual housholders, small building businesses and right up to multinational building companies. We help with your unwanted timber in a number of different ways. If the wood that you have is of a sufficient quantity and quality, we may be able to offer free collection.

Preston Barracks, our new home…
We have now closed our shop at Circus Street, and moved it to our new home at Preston Barracks – the site just north of the B&Q retail park on Lewes Road (see map below left).

Built in the 1980’s, this old Territorial Army building was used for cadet training for about fifteen years, and then sat empty for over ten years. It’s had a variety of unofficial tenants, but we are proud to be the new ‘anchor tenants’ of FIELD, part of a new project from the developers Cathedral Group (more info here).

Our opening hours and phone number, website and email will all remain the same, but our address will be: The Woodstore, Preston Barracks, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GL

New London Road showroom…
We also have a new showroom just off London Road near Preston Circus, at Unit 2 Longley Industrial Estate, Elder Place, Brighton, BN1 4GY. This is where our carpenters’ workshop is based, so it’s the perfect place to find out about having furniture made to order or to see some of the beautiful furniture we make. Please pop in Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30 or call 01273 570600, or email us info@woodrecycling.org.uk.
