The Rose Hill Tavern could belong to us!

The Campaign has already won recognition of The Rose Hill Tavern as a ‘Community Asset’ and now we have a chance to buy it and secure it as a community facility for good. But we don’t have long and we need your help.

The Rose Hill has been a pub since the 1870’s but it was bought by developers who wanted to turn it into luxury flats. We have until October 2nd to raise the money to buy the pub. Community Asset status only provides protection from development for a year before another planning application can be made. The only way to guarantee the pub won’t be bought by developers is to buy it ourselves.

The Rose Hill Tavern – 145 Years of History
The Rose Hill Tavern is one of the few remaining traditional neighbourhood pubs left in the rapidly changing London Road area. There has been a pub on the site since the 1870’s. Featuring distinctive green tiles on the exterior, the livery of the now defunct United Ales, the pub is on CAMRA’s national register of historic pubs.

The Rose Hill has beautiful stained glass windows and glass panels inside the pub. Nestled in a side street off London Road, there are not many of these pubs left that are based in the heart of the communities they serve. The Rose Hill Tavern has a traditional interior, but one that could be used for many activities. With your help, we can make this a unique community pub.

The Rose Hill Tavern as always been a pub that welcomes everyone in the community, young and old. We want to see the space put to good use and are asking local people what they would like from their community pub. Suggestions so far include a microbrewery, space for business meetings, training for people learning the pub and catering trades, and a venue for pop-ups. Please send us your ideas and suggestions.

We only have 2 months to save the Rose Hill. Can you help?

  • Share your professional skills. We urgently need people with finance, legal or property expertise.
  • Donate to our fighting fund. We need to raise the money for a structural survey right away.
  • Show the level of community support. Add a goodwill message to our Supporters Wall.

Rose Hill Tavern—Crowdfunder
The Rose Hill Tavern opened in the 1870s until its closure in 2014, when its PubCo owners put it up for sale and it was bought by property developers.

We were dismayed at the loss of one of Brighton’s loveliest looking and friendliest pubs.We got into action and got together to nominate it as an Asset of Community Value. Brighton Council agree, but we then had to fight an appeal against that decision to the Council (which we won) and then to a Judge in the legal tribunal set up to be the final stage (we won again). We then objected to the planning application the developers put in to the Council to turn the pub into 2 flats and in April, the Council Planning Committee rejected that application.

The pub is now back on the market, and using the powers under the Localism Act, we’ve lodged an intention to make a bid. A steering Committee is working on plans for the future – a community owned pub, or run in conjunction with a professional chain? Own the building, lease the pub? Whatever we plan, it’ll need a serious amount of money, and we’ll be doing a community share issue as part of it, so let us know if you’re interested, and what you’d be prepared to invest!
